We know that virtual reality is growing strongly in several business sectors including architecture and construction – but what about charity-focused applications? That’s what Andrew Lucas Studios has been involved in over the last few weeks, creating a virtual reality experience to help drive funding for an exciting agri-tech project in Northern Cambodia by UK charity Green Shoots.

The experience transports users to the Cambodian site where the new agri-tech centre is to be built, helping the charity to secure donors by giving them a more comprehensive idea of how it will look and feel to walk around the space when it is finally completed. The build, which has been completed pro bono, will also be made available to the architect Squires & Partners, for use during the design and proofing stage of the build.

The build itself was completed to a tight deadline in just under ten days in time for Green Shoots’ first fundraising event on 10th November and contains a number of firsts for Andrew Lucas Studios, including the first time that the team have modelled a project that will include native Cambodian materials and building methods. The experience uses Andrew Lucas Studios’ proprietary teleportation navigation system, which means users can quickly explore the entire plot of land and the various buildings and landscaping that will be put in place as part of the first phase of the project.

The current build only shows the first iteration of what will be a multi-phase build; over the coming weeks and months, the experience will be updated to allow people to explore multiple project stages, as well as adding even more realistic contours and environmental effects to give a more accurate picture of how it will look once completed.

“This was an awesome challenge for the design team, allowing us to experiment with new material and texture designs that we wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to try out,” explains Tomek Florczak, Projects Director at Andrew Lucas Studios. "We look forward to developing this over the coming months to make it an even more realistic representation of this unique build."

“It’s a brilliant project to be involved in,” adds Hamza Abbas, Director at Andrew Lucas. "We’re really pleased that it was so well received by everyone who tried it during last week’s event, and that we have been able to use our company's specialist design capabilities to further such a great cause."
